WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is one of the world’s oldest healing modalities. Traditional Chinese Acupuncture can be traced back over 5000 years through China and Asia and is
a therapy which stimulates specific points located on or near the surface of the skin. These points can be stimulated by various means, including finger pressure (acupressure), cupping, scraping, moxabustion and very fine needles.

There are more than 500 Acupuncture points located over the body. Not all but most of the points are located on channels known as meridians. Meridians are channels of energy, described as Qi. Qi moves through the meridian system like electrical currents do through an electrical circuit.

There are 12 main meridians which are bilaterally (both sides) and symmetrically placed on
the human and mammal body. There are 2 extra meridians, one passing over the front (anterior) midline of the body and the other the back (posterior) midline. The 12 main meridians have an internal connection to each of our main organs – heart, small intestine, pericardium, spleen, stomach, lung, colon, kidney, bladder, liver and gall bladder.

Often through stress, injury, pollution, emotional trauma and poor diet the electrical system can be disrupted causing the related organ to reduce its normal function. For example if the liver is disrupted you may be more likely to suffer from hang-overs, be irritable, get muscle cramps, lack motivation and have headaches.

Treatment

When you see an Acupuncturist at Chirotechnic they will take an extensive case history to
help make a diagnosis. Depending on the individual case a physical examination may be required – blood pressure may be taken, neurological and orthopaedic tests may also be performed.

Acupuncture points will be chosen and stimulated to activate your bodies own healing mechanisms, reducing the time that injuries and illnesses take to heal. Stimulation of the acupuncture points usually takes 20 minutes. Standard treatment is 40 minutes. Longer consultations are available.
